Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Command & Conquer: Red Alert is a real-time strategy computer game of the Command & Conquer franchise, produced by Westwood Studios and released by Virgin Interactive in 1996. The second game to bear the "C&C" title, Red Alert is the prequel to the original Command & Conquer of 1995,[1][2][3][4] and takes place in the early history of the alternate universe of Command & Conquer when Allied Forces battle an aggressive Soviet Union for control over the European mainland. It was initially available for PC (MS-DOS & Windows 95 versions included in one package), and was subsequently ported to PlayStation. The PlayStation version was also re-released as a download for PSP. On August 31, 2008, EA officially rendered Command & Conquer: Red Alert freeware.[5]

Red Alert was praised for its user interface, which claimed to be more developed than the competing games of its time. Players could queue commands, create unit groups that could be selected by a number key, and control numerous units at a time. The game was known to be easy to control, simple to learn and responsive to users commands. It also featured two factions that had differing styles of play. Red Alert is also hailed as one of the first games to feature competitive online play. The single player campaign also received high praise for its detailed story line and missions, which often required the player to defeat the enemy with various sets of circumstances before continuing. The single player campaign was also complemented by live action cinematic sequences that are a feature of all Command & Conquer RTS games since the original, except for Command and Conquer: Generals.

The game balance between the forces of the Allied and Soviet armies differed from other games at its time. Like the 'rock-paper-scissors' balancing of modern games, Red Alert required each player to use their side's strengths in order to compensate for their weaknesses. This stood in contrast to games such as Total Annihilation or Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, in which both sides had units with similar abilities and relied on outnumbering the opponent with more units of a certain kind.

The Soviets' vehicles tend to have more hit points and firepower than Allied vehicles, but are often slower moving and more expensive. The Soviets also have superior defensive capabilities against both ground attacks (Tesla Coils) and air attacks (Surface to Air Missiles). In online play and computer skirmish, they have access to two of the Allied side's infantry: the Rocket Trooper and Tanya, a commando capable of easily killing infantry and destroying structures. They also have a wide selection of air units, and could deploy infantry by air through paratroops or by the Chinook transport helicopter (the latter only present in multiplayer). The Soviet "tank rush" was a popular strategy online, involving building many heavy tanks and overwhelming the opponent with sheer numbers.
In-game beta screenshot of a Soviet base on the PC version.

The Allies' forces are generally cheaper, faster to build and more agile. Their minelayers can destroy enemy armour and their infantry can survive longer with good use of their Medic unit. They are at a disadvantage on land, as the Allies' strongest tank is still weaker than the Soviets' starting tank, and has the same speed. The Allies have only one air unit compared to three Soviet units and their defences against a ground assault are much weaker. On the sea, the Allies possess an advantage in naval power thanks to the Cruiser, which has the longest-ranged and most powerful surface-to-surface attack in the game, and the Destroyer, which is capable of adeptly taking on any type of unit type in the game. The only offensive naval unit the Soviets have is the submarine, which cannot attack land-based targets or aircraft, so it is useless unless the opponent builds any sea units, and while it is normally invisible except when surfacing to attack, it can be detected by destroyers and gunboats. When heavily damaged it is not able to submerge. The Allies also possess several other tools, such as stealing enemy resources, hiding their own units and structures, or revealing the game map with satellite technology.

Farm Land Ownership

The land purchase decision is one of the most important decisions farmers will make in their life. Yet, it is a decision that is seldom made. Because the decision is not often made and due to the complexities surrounding the decision, it is too often a decision based on emotion rather than careful analysis.

An Iowa State University study in 2000 revealed that only 29 percent of Iowa's farmers had identified a successor for their farm. This study further showed that only 45 percent of the farmers had an estate plan. The land tenure survey of 2002 found that 48 percent of Iowa's farmland is owned by individuals over 65 years of age with half of that owned by individuals over 74 years of age.

These studies show that over the next several years a significant portion of Iowa's farm land will change ownership. Further, the studies also reveal that few people have planned what will happen to their farm upon their death. This means there will be a number of people who will be facing the decision whether or not to sell the land and whether or not to buy land.

To help address the needs of these people Iowa State University Extension has updated two important decision aids. The first is a pamphlet entitled So You have Inherited a Farm. This pamphlet is designed to provide basic information for the decision regarding what to do with a farm inheritance and how to make the best decision. The second decision aid is this home study course.

The purpose of this course is to provide relevant information to help evaluate the land purchase decision. Remember as you go through the course that land price and land values are not necessarily the same. The price of land is determined in the market, whereas the value of the land is an individual determination.

This course is designed for purchase of agricultural land in Iowa. Most of the basic concepts, however, will apply to other real estate purchases as well.

To help analyze the land purchase decision, the course is divided into five lessons.

The land purchase decision involves long-term projections and substantial capital investment. As such, it is always a risky decision that can have major consequences. The decision must be carefully analyzed. Hopefully this course will provide a sound basis for making this important decision.

CHILDRENS GAMES

Infotainment has become an important means of learning for people of all ages. What does this term imply? Basically, it manes information through the means of entertainment. Educationalists, as well as other experts around the world have found that people learn best through entertainment. All the more, this is a proven fact where children are concerned.

In fact, most schools have been encouraging teachers to use the play-way method to teach their students. This means learning through fun. And it has been seen that children learn faster through this method. Thus, props such as puppets, toys, dolls, etc., are increasingly being used in play schools to teach children basic concepts. Well, games and toys is not just a means of teaching preprimary students, but also older children, as well as adults. The play-way method of learning takes the form of educational games. This includes games such as spell check, scrabble, pictionary, as well as the brainteasers. Brainteasers help to sharpen one’s logical mind, as well as their memory. These games have been designed in such a way that they teach one about varied subjects, concepts, etc. There are games that bring about physical, mental, intellectual development in children. They help one understand historical events, as well as cultural diversities of the world.

There are board games, as well as card games, video games and computer games. Board games are generally played with objects that are placed on a specifically designed board. These objects are moved around the board. For instance, a game that teaches about geography would have map sketched out with places marked, And as the players move their pieces, or counters they learn about the various places.

One of the common range games that help children learn words and spellings are the world building games such as spell check, scrabble, word building, etc. There are word making games published in newspapers. There are games that help developing various skills such as memory, concentration, focus, observation, etc. These are recommended for people of all ages.

After all, who said learning has to be a boring process?

Evaluating Fox’s ‘Remote-Free TV’

Fox A scene from “Dollhouse.”

“Fringe,” which had its premiere in September, was the first test of Fox’s fewer-commercials strategy, which the network calls “Remote-Free TV.” The second test comes tonight with the premiere of “Dollhouse.”

Episodes of the shows average a total of about 10 minutes of commercials, four to six minutes fewer than the typical hourlong show. Fox has charged movie studios, wireless companies and retailers a premium price for commercials on the program to partly compensate Fox for a lighter commercial load.

But has the commercial format worked? Brian Stelter reports in The New York Times on Friday:

Fox says the shorter commercial breaks keep viewers more engaged and improve brand recall for advertisers. Viewers are also less likely to change the channel or fast-forward past the ads — but not to the degree that Fox would have liked. Perhaps more important, the network does not appear to be recouping all the costs of the experiment. It is unclear whether Remote-Free TV will be back next season.

Jon Nesvig, the president of sales for Fox Broadcasting, is satisfied with the experience. “Even if it wasn’t an absolutely positive financial success, it was definitely a worthwhile experiment and something that I am glad we have attempted and will continue to work on,” he said.

History and Features of Soccer Winning Eleven

Every year, the new version of the game is released first as Winning Eleven in Japan, and after a few months a slightly modified version is released worldwide, in two different packages: World Soccer Winning Eleven for the Americans, and Pro Evolution Soccer for the rest of the world. Additionally, in some countries a localized version is released, featuring local leagues and teams, instead of European ones. In 2007, the franchise used the name "Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer" for the American market, which transitioned to Pro Evolution Soccer in 2008, dropping the Winning Eleven moniker entirely for that region. This game is the number one game in the Middle East.

Winning Eleven's popularity has grown over the years, and is currently one of the most popular football games world-wide, fiercely rivaling EA's FIFA Series. World Soccer Winning Eleven 2009 is the latest version of the game and was released in Japan on November 27, 2008.

The Winning Eleven series has been produced under the guidance of Shingo "Seabass" Takatsuka at KCEJ.

The main single-player mode is the Master League mode, where the player is given control of a team of his/her selection. However, the players are all generic, fictional players with relatively poor statistics. These players have become cult figures to many people playing the Master League. The aim is to use these players and gain points by winning matches, using acquired points to purchase real players to join the team. Ultimately, one should end up with a team of skilled players. In Winning Eleven 8, players' growth and decline curves were added, where a player's statistics may improve or decline, depending on training and age. This added a new depth to purchasing players, as one is less likely to purchase an aging star whose statistics are declining over an up-and-coming youngster whose statistics rise dramatically.

Sony has big plans for PlayStation Portable

SONY'S smallest PlayStation is not being used to its full potential.

It is a claim that is not only coming from games experts but from within Sony itself.

That is destined to change, though. New features will be added to the miniature console this week that could transform the way fans use the PlayStation Portable, and even bigger changes are planned for next year.

The PSP is more than just a games console and Sony expects the additions to usher in its full potential as an internet-savvy, free call-making, messaging-sending, game-downloading, live television-screening machine that you shouldn't leave home without.

And users should expect more interactivity with the PlayStation 3, too.

PlayStation Portable features
  • Web browser: View the World Wide Web with the PSP's built-in browser
  • Game downloads: Access the PlayStation Store from the console for direct game, demo and wallpaper downloads
  • Skype: Service offering free internet calls from your PSP to any phone
  • Internet Radio: Access hundreds of internet radio broadcasts via ShoutCast
  • RSS Reader: Update alerts of websites and blogs
  • Camera: Go! Camera accessory fits to the top of the PSP for use as a camera.
  • Photos, videos & music can be stored on a PSP memory card and played on screen
  • Go! Messenger: an internet text and video message service for the PSP.
  • Play TV: To arrive in 2009, the service will transform the PSP into a miniature TV.
The revolution will begin tomorrow when Sony releases a new version of the hand-held console, called the PSP-3000. The new PSP looks almost identical to the Slim & Lite version of last year, although its form hides three important additions.

Firstly, its screen is noticeably brighter. To eliminate complaints about its outdoor performance, Sony has increased the screen's brightness and colour gamut. As a result, the screen is noticeably more vibrant, less prone to glare and movies and photos look more realistic.

The PSP-3000 also features a built-in microphone for the first time, which makes Skype internet calls easier and can also be used in games such as the shooter US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo and the language translation game TalkMan.

Thirdly, the game can now be plugged into any TV, including non-HD models, so you can play games on the big screen.

Other cosmetic changes include a smaller chrome ring on the back and a PlayStation logo on the Home button.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia and New Zealand managing director Michael Ephraim says the changes to the PSP-3000 are not designed to convince current users to upgrade their consoles, but are part of Sony's larger plan for the PSP.

"We're looking to appeal to a new market, a broader market, with this device," he says.

"These are just additional features, although the new screen is exceptional."

But the new PSP is just one element of a larger revamp for the device.

Sony last week issued a software update for the gadget adding, among other things, direct access to a game download store.

In the PlayStation Store users can download games, free game demos, movie trailers or even free PSP wallpapers. Games already available include Patapon, Echochrome and LocoRoco.

Swinburne University media and communications lecturer Dr Mark Finn says the ability to download games directly to the PSP could forever change the way users buy their PSP games and movies.

"Previously you had to go to the PlayStation Store through your PlayStation 3 (or through your PC) for downloadable content, so this will be so much easier for getting media and movies in particular," he says. "I think it might spell the end of the PSP's UMD disc (game cartridge)."

The software upgrade also added a full-size, onscreen keyboard to make entering text easier and a sleep timer that can be used during music playback.

Despite these additions, Ephraim admits some users still don't see the PSP as more than a game machine.

"The technophiles, gamers and digital savvy people really love their PSPs," he says. "It's their portable companion because you can use it to communicate and store your music, movies and games. But that hasn't crossed into the mainstream yet.

"Our job next year, ideally, is to communicate to every player in Australia what the capabilities of these machines are inside of gaming and outside of gaming. If we could talk to every consumer directly, and give them a demonstration, I think we would convert 50 per cent of the population to buying a PS3 or PSP."

But Ephraim says Sony will add one more important function to the PSP before launching an education campaign. Sony, he says, will turn the PSP into a miniature television in the first half of 2009.

The new service will be called PlayTV and will let PlayStation 3 owners record television broadcasts to their console's hard drive.

PlayTV will also let PSP owners access these downloads over the internet or play live television on the small screen.

"You will be able to access them via any wireless internet hotspot, so basically your PSP turns into a portable TV screen," Ephraim says. "That's when we're going to make a concerted effort to communicate all the incredible features of the PSP: watch TV, Skype, download games, everything."

Finn says PlayTV probably will be popular with current users, who want the PSP to be a "more versatile device", but says PlayTV's use could be hampered by a lack of wireless internet hotspots.

"It'd be fantastic in a country with good wi-fi access, but Australia isn't one of them," he says. "I can definitely see people using it at home, but outside it might be tricky."

In addition to live TV broadcasts, the PSP will earn support from another popular source early next year. Insomniac, which created the alien invasion series Resistance: Fall of Man, will create a game for the PSP with a PlayStation 3 crossover feature.

Resistance: Retribution players will be able to plug their PSP into a PlayStation 3 for the PSP to become "infected" and unlock new gaming levels.

Insomniac president Ted Price says the idea will give players a new way to play Resistance and will flesh out the game's story.

"I don't want to give away too much about this but it is another chapter of the Resistance story that links the PlayStation 3 games together really well," he says. "It's a different set of characters and we worked really closely with the team from the PSP game to make sure both stories jibe and it feels like part of this universe."

With so many additions planned for the next year, it could soon be a case of what the PSP cannot do, rather than what it can.

the game

Playing a computer game is one thing, but how are these games produced? Could I make my own computer game? How do companies bring together the art, music and story and meld it together to form an interactive experience? To some, this process seems like a voodoo; a complex dark art that they neither understand, or feel that only large companies with millions of funding and masses of staff are capable of doing.

'Programming' is the act of instructing a computer to do your bidding. Computer games are made up of millions of individual instructions that tell the computer what to draw where, how to make the characters act, what to show on screen and so on. These instructions are what bring together the art, sound and story, much like a film director calls out, "Lights, Camera, Action!". (Although Programming is not quite that simple, yet!)

Game programming is an endless supply of coffee. It is sitting in your room listening to music on your headphones because it's 01:00 and everyone else is sleeping. Game programming is collision detection, vectors, mathematics, and in some cases, frustration. Game programming is NOT sleeping and definitely NOT profitable (for most) but game programming is FUN and we love game programming! Game programming all the way!

Nonetheless, it's possible to get a job in the game industry! Imagine working with other creative, like-minded individuals to develop games that millions of people will potentially play! Game programmers work with other passionate artists, game designers, and production managers to take an idea to reality. Many companies such as Microsoft Games Studios, Rare, and Bungie offer internships to students who have an interest in video game programming. So, keep reading to discover how you can develop the game of your dreams.

Game Programming is your school level studies combined with your state of the art computer programming skills. If you know C/C++ perfectly, that doesn't assure that you'd be a perfect game programmer because game programming requires knowledge of 3D mathematics clubbed with AI and physics skills. Game Programming is fun but the most challenging form of programming as there are not much possibilities of work arounds in this domain, there's just one way and that is DO IT RIGHT IN THE MOST OPTIMIZED WAY.

New Games

New Games embody an attitude toward play. They are cooperative games sometimes including competition where participants play together rather than against one another. The capacity to join and have fun with others is more important than winning. Everyone can play New Games regardless of age, ability, size, or gender. They require little or no equipment and are presented and played in a safe manner that encourages participation, creativity, and personal expression. New Games offers a new direction for traditional sports, physical education, and recreation. Ultimately, by cooperating in play, we learn to live together better.

New Games are for... elementary to high school classes; businesses (from conflict resolution to team building); physical education programs; retirement homes; after school programs; community groups; youth groups; religious groups; parents. In short, anyone who leads or is part of a group.
