Command & Conquer: Red Alert

Command & Conquer: Red Alert is a real-time strategy computer game of the Command & Conquer franchise, produced by Westwood Studios and released by Virgin Interactive in 1996. The second game to bear the "C&C" title, Red Alert is the prequel to the original Command & Conquer of 1995,[1][2][3][4] and takes place in the early history of the alternate universe of Command & Conquer when Allied Forces battle an aggressive Soviet Union for control over the European mainland. It was initially available for PC (MS-DOS & Windows 95 versions included in one package), and was subsequently ported to PlayStation. The PlayStation version was also re-released as a download for PSP. On August 31, 2008, EA officially rendered Command & Conquer: Red Alert freeware.[5]

Red Alert was praised for its user interface, which claimed to be more developed than the competing games of its time. Players could queue commands, create unit groups that could be selected by a number key, and control numerous units at a time. The game was known to be easy to control, simple to learn and responsive to users commands. It also featured two factions that had differing styles of play. Red Alert is also hailed as one of the first games to feature competitive online play. The single player campaign also received high praise for its detailed story line and missions, which often required the player to defeat the enemy with various sets of circumstances before continuing. The single player campaign was also complemented by live action cinematic sequences that are a feature of all Command & Conquer RTS games since the original, except for Command and Conquer: Generals.

The game balance between the forces of the Allied and Soviet armies differed from other games at its time. Like the 'rock-paper-scissors' balancing of modern games, Red Alert required each player to use their side's strengths in order to compensate for their weaknesses. This stood in contrast to games such as Total Annihilation or Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, in which both sides had units with similar abilities and relied on outnumbering the opponent with more units of a certain kind.

The Soviets' vehicles tend to have more hit points and firepower than Allied vehicles, but are often slower moving and more expensive. The Soviets also have superior defensive capabilities against both ground attacks (Tesla Coils) and air attacks (Surface to Air Missiles). In online play and computer skirmish, they have access to two of the Allied side's infantry: the Rocket Trooper and Tanya, a commando capable of easily killing infantry and destroying structures. They also have a wide selection of air units, and could deploy infantry by air through paratroops or by the Chinook transport helicopter (the latter only present in multiplayer). The Soviet "tank rush" was a popular strategy online, involving building many heavy tanks and overwhelming the opponent with sheer numbers.

The Allies' forces are generally cheaper, faster to build and more agile. Their minelayers can destroy enemy armour and their infantry can survive longer with good use of their Medic unit. They are at a disadvantage on land, as the Allies' strongest tank is still weaker than the Soviets' starting tank, and has the same speed. The Allies have only one air unit compared to three Soviet units and their defences against a ground assault are much weaker. On the sea, the Allies possess an advantage in naval power thanks to the Cruiser, which has the longest-ranged and most powerful surface-to-surface attack in the game, and the Destroyer, which is capable of adeptly taking on any type of unit type in the game. The only offensive naval unit the Soviets have is the submarine, which cannot attack land-based targets or aircraft, so it is useless unless the opponent builds any sea units, and while it is normally invisible except when surfacing to attack, it can be detected by destroyers and gunboats. When heavily damaged it is not able to submerge. The Allies also possess several other tools, such as stealing enemy resources, hiding their own units and structures, or revealing the game map with satellite technology.

Farm Land Ownership

The land purchase decision is one of the most important decisions farmers will make in their life. Yet, it is a decision that is seldom made. Because the decision is not often made and due to the complexities surrounding the decision, it is too often a decision based on emotion rather than careful analysis.

An Iowa State University study in 2000 revealed that only 29 percent of Iowa's farmers had identified a successor for their farm. This study further showed that only 45 percent of the farmers had an estate plan. The land tenure survey of 2002 found that 48 percent of Iowa's farmland is owned by individuals over 65 years of age with half of that owned by individuals over 74 years of age.

These studies show that over the next several years a significant portion of Iowa's farm land will change ownership. Further, the studies also reveal that few people have planned what will happen to their farm upon their death. This means there will be a number of people who will be facing the decision whether or not to sell the land and whether or not to buy land.

To help address the needs of these people Iowa State University Extension has updated two important decision aids. The first is a pamphlet entitled So You have Inherited a Farm. This pamphlet is designed to provide basic information for the decision regarding what to do with a farm inheritance and how to make the best decision. The second decision aid is this home study course.

The purpose of this course is to provide relevant information to help evaluate the land purchase decision. Remember as you go through the course that land price and land values are not necessarily the same. The price of land is determined in the market, whereas the value of the land is an individual determination.

This course is designed for purchase of agricultural land in Iowa. Most of the basic concepts, however, will apply to other real estate purchases as well.

To help analyze the land purchase decision, the course is divided into five lessons.

The land purchase decision involves long-term projections and substantial capital investment. As such, it is always a risky decision that can have major consequences. The decision must be carefully analyzed. Hopefully this course will provide a sound basis for making this important decision.

CHILDRENS GAMES

Infotainment has become an important means of learning for people of all ages. What does this term imply? Basically, it manes information through the means of entertainment. Educationalists, as well as other experts around the world have found that people learn best through entertainment. All the more, this is a proven fact where children are concerned.

In fact, most schools have been encouraging teachers to use the play-way method to teach their students. This means learning through fun. And it has been seen that children learn faster through this method. Thus, props such as puppets, toys, dolls, etc., are increasingly being used in play schools to teach children basic concepts. Well, games and toys is not just a means of teaching preprimary students, but also older children, as well as adults. The play-way method of learning takes the form of educational games. This includes games such as spell check, scrabble, pictionary, as well as the brainteasers. Brainteasers help to sharpen one’s logical mind, as well as their memory. These games have been designed in such a way that they teach one about varied subjects, concepts, etc. There are games that bring about physical, mental, intellectual development in children. They help one understand historical events, as well as cultural diversities of the world.

There are board games, as well as card games, video games and computer games. Board games are generally played with objects that are placed on a specifically designed board. These objects are moved around the board. For instance, a game that teaches about geography would have map sketched out with places marked, And as the players move their pieces, or counters they learn about the various places.

One of the common range games that help children learn words and spellings are the world building games such as spell check, scrabble, word building, etc. There are word making games published in newspapers. There are games that help developing various skills such as memory, concentration, focus, observation, etc. These are recommended for people of all ages.

After all, who said learning has to be a boring process?
